On March 1, 2025, Keep Wakulla County Beautiful (KWCB), in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), kicked off the Greatest American Cleanup and Leaders Against Litter initiative with an outstanding community effort to clean up the Apalachicola National Forest and Florida Trail.
A total of 61 volunteers from Wakulla County and at least four surrounding counties showed up, along with USFS employees, ready to take on the challenge. Their hard work paid off, removing a staggering 4.05 tons of garbage from the forest—including 23 discarded tires.
Among the unexpected (and unpleasant) finds was a freezer full of animal carcasses, which left a stench volunteers won’t soon forget! Other large debris included mattresses, bags of clothing, and an overwhelming number of shotgun shells. Volunteers also cleared out countless bottles, cans, styrofoam, and plastic containers, ensuring the forest is cleaner and safer for wildlife and visitors alike.
KWCB was especially grateful for the community leaders who joined in the effort, leading by example. Clerk of the Court Greg James and Supervisor of Elections Joe Morgan, both KWCB board members, rolled up their sleeves and got to work. County Commissioner Quincee Messersmith also lent a hand helping to feed the volunteers, serving up lunch alongside a batch of festive “green” cupcakes to celebrate the day’s hard work.
“This kind of turnout just goes to show the power of community action,” said a KWCB representative. “We couldn’t have done it without the dedication of our volunteers and support from the U.S. Forest Service. Every piece of litter removed makes a difference in preserving our beautiful public lands.”
KWCB extends a huge thank you to all the volunteers, community leaders, and partners who made this cleanup a success. If you missed this event, stay tuned for more opportunities to get involved and help Keep Wakulla County Beautiful!
